Researchers from the Epigenetics & Cancer Biology Group at the IPO Porto Research Center, in collaboration with the Pathology and Clinical Pathology Services, have developed an algorithm to improve the screening of women who test positive for HPV infection in the Population Cervical Cancer Screening Program implemented in the Northern region of the country. Based…
Medulloblastoma is a common and aggressive type of brain tumor in children, consisting of four molecular subgroups. Traditional methods of treatment with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy result in an incomplete response with serious side effects. Immunotherapy using the blockade of immune checkpoints such as PD-1, PD-L1 and CTLA4 has increased its prominence in solid tumor…
Cancer mortality reduction remains a major societal goal, in part materialized in the many efforts to develop effective biomarkers for early detection. Early detection of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) significantly increases the likelihood of curative treatment, avoiding the need for subsequent therapies, which have side effect and entail more comorbidities. Thus, the research team from…
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, are at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) when compared to the general population. Colorectal cancer associated with long-lasting (more than 8-10 years of diagnosis) bowel inflammation (colitis) is one of the major complications of inflammatory bowel disease. The mechanisms underlying…
Skin cancer (SC) is one of the most common types of cancer in the world population, with an increasing annual incidence rate. The p53 protein plays a crucial role in skin tumorigenesis, and its function is often compromised due to mutations induced by ultraviolet radiation (UVB). Currently, sunscreen is the most recommended agent for the…
Researchers from the Cancer Biology & Epigenetics Group at the Research Center of IPO Porto, Portugal have revealed a pivotal link between epigenetic regulation and prostate cancer radioresistance. The study, entitled “Epigenetic Regulation of TP53 is Involved in Prostate Cancer Radioresistance and DNA Damage Response Signaling,” was recently published in the prestigious journal Signal Transduction…
